Full Description

PRN 64913 Before the Sleaford Navigation canal was constructed, the Carre Street area looked completely different. An engraving of 1798 shows a track roughly corresponding to the southern half of the street and a bridge leading across the river to the yard and rear entrance of the George Inn. What the engraver, perhaps understandably, does not show is the cockpit which was once situated at the bottom of the yard. The George, probably demolished about 1822, was one of Sleaford's old coaching inns, established since at least the mid-1600s.{1}
