Full Description

PRN 62224 The remains of a Roman road were discovered in a hollow, sealed by a layer of alluvial clay and ploughsoil. Removal of these covering layers revealed a north to south aligned road, 3.50m wide and made up from tabular pieces of limestone set on edge. The stones varied in seize from 329mm x 70mm to 50mm x 30mm. There was no evidence for heavy wear on the surface and the road make-up was edged with larger kerbstones set flat or on end. A loose spread of stones along the western side appears to have protected the edge of the kerb. Hand cleaning of the northern edge failed to locate any material which could have been laid to support the road surface. This section of road may form part of Mareham Lane (PRN 64105) or as a separate road running parallel to it.{1}{2}
