Full Description

Late 18th century red brick farmhouse with 19th century alterations, now 2 cottages. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} A detailed survey of 2 Castle Cottages was conducted in November 2006, prior to proposed alterations and refurbishment. The structure forms the northern half of the former farmhouse, which was subdividied into the two cottages at some point in the 19th century. The former farmhouse was constructed of red brick, laid in a Flemish bond to the front elevation and a mainly English Garden Wall bond to the other sides. The building is of two storeys, and is three bays long by two rooms deep, and features a pantile roof with tumbling-in at the gables. The structure was originally entered from a central entrance in the south-west front, though this was blocked after the subdivision, and both cottages are now entered from the north-eastern elevation. {2} The former farmhouse was the subject of a programme of building survey and assessment, conducted in October 2015, to inform its future conservation and management. The building was subdivided to form two discrete farm labourers cottages in the 1860s, after the occupants relocated to the nearby Bridge House (PRN 48012). As with the adjacent Tattershall Castle, the cottages were acquired by Lord Curzon in 1911-2, and bequested to the National Trust upon his death in 1925. {3}
