The school was founded in 1604 by Robert Carre, and was intended for the better education of children born or living with their parents in the parishes of New Sleaford, Old Sleaford, Aswarby, Holdingham, North and South Rauceby , Anwick, Kirkby la Thorpe and Evedon. The school did well until the Civil War period, when the upheaval of the war interrupted the school's funding. At some period after this, the salary paid to the masters became insufficient and there were problems appointing them. A new arrangement was worked out in the 1830s, and new buildings built. {4}
