Full Description

A group of buildings from 16th century onwards, part stone and part brick, forming a picturesque and complicated group. A good deal of 19th century Gothick. Roofs of old tiles. West side mainly 19th century with restored narrow centre tower with 14th century pointed stone doorway with corbels and a frieze of angels beneath ogee heads. On the
North side of this is a straight-headed four-light window with a square dripmould. 14th century head of a king in chimney-stack. Two-light 14th century window in North gable. North side of courtyard has date 1637 and above unusual polygonal chimney-stack, perhaps 14th century with attached shafts and moulded capitals and turreted pots.
Adjoining is part of 17th century house with crow-stepped gable and a stone-mullioned bay of two storeys with six-light windows. Date between storeys is 1619. This side of No 33 is late 19th century and included as part of the fabric. Entrance to cobbled yard from street has pair of fine early 18th century stone gate piers with 'pineapple' finials. A blocked segmental-headed doorway in wall has small modern dog's drinking fountain at base, and appealing rhyme. Grotesque built into wall of garden. All these fragments probably from Sleaford Castle. Interior of Manor House has one early room, behind the 1619 wing, with panelling with Tudor Renaissance motifs. Adjoining is Rhodes House, of mid 18th century. Three storeys in red brick with wood modillion eaves cornice. Five windows, stone lintels, keystones, mostly hung sashes with glazing bars. Band between ground and lst floor. High stone plinth. Classical stone doorcase with 3/4 columns and entablature with 2 shell ornaments. Recessed door of six panels. An extension of two storeys and two windows of mid 19th century. Garden wall in stone with old tile coping and moulded stone doorway with segmental pediment.
