Full Description

PRN 64656 [Includes PRN 60115, now deleted.] Following the observation of a Saxon pottery scatter in this field, an area was excavated in 1973-4. A hall-type post hole building was revealed, and it seems likely that there are more of these buildings outside the excavated area. A large quantity of middle Saxon pottery was recovered including decorated sherds as well as numerous bones, some burnt. {1}{2}{5} Numerous casual finds of Saxon artefacts have been made in this field. The finds include fragments of a bone comb, a chalk loomweight, a girdle hanger fragment, pottery and a Saxon coin. A terminal fragment of a cruciform brooch and a clay spindle whorl were also found slightly to the north (TF 0647 3855) and are probably associated with this site. {1} Metalwork items have also been recovered from this site. {4}
