Full Description

PRN 64582 Numerous Iron Age ditches were uncovered during a watching brief to the south of the A17 and susequently excavated. The ditches represented four distinct phases of activity, and probably represent field boundaries. A total of 320 late Iron Age pottery sherds were recovered from the ditches as well as a small amount of Romano-British pottery which probably originated on a nearby occupation site (e.g. PRN 60458). A very small amount of fired clay, including part of a triangular loom weight, was alsa recovered and some evidence of smithing, including a hearth bottom and a copper alloy fragment, was found. Some animal bone was recovered but it was in very poor condition. Some environmental sampling was also carried out. {1}{2} To the north of the road, in the same area, are possible late prehistoric settlement cropmarks. These may also be related to the possible cropmark field system to the west of Moor Farm (PRN 63570). {3}
