Full Description
Former militia barracks, armoury and store, built in 1858, by Henry Goddard, County Surveyor. The building comprises the general 'keep' with central courtyard, and with officers quarters attached to the rear (east). The main 'keep' is in a castellated gothic style, and built of squared rubble stone with ashlar dressings. The rectangular front range has an arched gateway leading into the central courtyard, which has utilitarian rooms and buildings on the other sides. These buildings are now in use for a variety of commercial purposes.
The former officers' quarters to the rear were built of red brick, with limestone dressings, and feature hipped slate roofs. They are now in use as private residences.
The barracks were built following the 1852 Militia Reform act as a secure store for the South Lincolnshire Militia, and a pair in design to that at Lincoln for the North Lincolnshire Militia (see MLI91541). They were intended to provide a defensible base and centre for recruitment to meet the county's quota of militia recruits, and in a consciously historical style to achieve that end.
