Full Description

PRN 24036 Three double-courtyard plan workhouses in Lincolnshire, those of Bourne, Spalding and Stamford Unions, were by a local architect, Bryan Browning, who also designed the 'square'-plan Peterborough Union Workhouse. Of these buildings, only Bourne survives.{1} A courtyard plan workhouse is depiected on the Ordnance Survey County Series map of 1905.{2} Spalding Union Workhouse was built 1836-7, and had a detatched school and infirmary. The buildings have been demolished and the site developed, and very lttle is known about their form apart from the general layout shown in ordnance survey maps.{3}
