Full Description

PRN 36820 Site of Bourne Union Workhouse (also known as Well Head House Poor Law Institution). The building is depicted on the Ordnance Survey County Series map of 1905.{1} Three double-courtyard plan workhouses in Lincolnshire, those of Bourne, Spalding and Stamford Unions, were by a local architect, Bryan Browning, who also designed the 'square'-plan Peterborough Union Workhouse. Of these, only Bourne survives. Its courtyards, now infilled, were bounded by single-storeyed ranges across the front and sides and by a linear accomodation block to the rear.{2} An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to redevelopment. The work found evidence for the construction of the 19th century workhouse and later modernisation in the 20th century.{3}{4} Bourne Union Workhouse was built between 1836 and 1837 at a cost of £5,350 and could accommodate 300 inmates. The architect was Bryan Browning, who also designed workhouses in Spalding and Stamford. It was a three storey building built of red brick with hipped slate roofs. It had a T-shaped layout. The central block projected forward to the south and had canted bays to either side of a three storey rear wing. Either side of the central block were accommodation wings. Smaller buildings, including a laundry, linked the ends of the main building together to create two enclosed exercise yards, which were further separated for different categories of inmate (male/female, able-bodied/infirm). There was also a single storey entrance block built of part-rendered red brick. After 1930, the workhouse became Bourne Public Assistance Institution and was also known as Wellhead House. During the 1930s, it became a hospital for the mentally handicapped and the building was substantially altered. This included a link between the entrance block and main building. The buildings were later used by a printing company before they were demolished in 2001.{5}
