Full Description

A school is depicted in this location on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map. {1} The school was built during 1877-78 and cost £1330. It opened to its first pupils on April 8th 1878. {2} The building is still in use as a school, and has been extended. {3} The minutes of the meetings of the School Board, which first met on 12th February 1876, give many details about the planning and building of the school including the acquisition of the site, appointment of an architect, tendering for a builder, various funding issues, the actual building work and the appointment of school staff. The architect was Mr James Gridwood of London, the builder was W.B. Millson of Donington and the school master was Mr Fricker, assisted by Miss Clara Davies as assistant mistress. A house with garden was provided rent and rate free for the master. Parents had to pay School Pence each week to send their children to the school, and the cost of this varied depending on the value of the parents' house. {4}
