Full Description

PRN 64549 A small, roughly rectangular moat is still visible to the south of the current Thorpe Latimer House, and is Scheduled. This moat probably surrounded the manorial seat of the Latimer family. For a full description see the Scheduling document. {1}{2}{3} The right to hold a market and a fair was granted to William le Latymer on the 4th November 1259 by Henry III. The market was held on Tuesdays and the fair was held on St James's Day (25th July). Both were held at 'the manor', which probably refers to this site. {4} The history of the Latimer family, the major landowners at Thorpe Latimer, is discussed by Trollope. {5} Thorpe Latimer is now a farm of about 400 acres was the seat of the Latimers and their mansion appears to have been strongly fortified for its site is still surrounded by a broad deep moat, crossed by a bridge. {6}
