Full Description
Former school, Church Lane, Walcot near Folkingham. Depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1905. {1}
The school appears on a recent aerial photogrpah. {2}
Pickworth School Board was formed in 1877, and the school and schoolmaster's house were erected the next year at a cost of £950. The school was closed in 1971, with pupils transferred to Folkingham School. In May 1972 the school and schoolmaster's house were sold together for £7500. They have since been sold separately and are still separate properties.
The school building was a cross-wing plan one and a half/two storey red brick building in English Bond, under a pitched gabled slate roof. Dogtooth dentil course of yellow brick at eaves height and below the windows. The western gable holds a datestone inscribed '1878'. The schoolroom originally occupied the range parallel to the road, and the two-storey cross-wing was in use as the schoolmaster's house. An undated photograph of the building from before the conversion to two properties shows three ridge stacks for the schoolroom and a ridge stack and lateral stack for the master's house, all in red brick. A new wing was since added to the east of the original building, in sympathetic style, presumably when the conversion into two properties took place. {3}{4}
