Full Description

PRN 64492 Late 18th century house and 19th century mill buildings of 2 builds, all red brick although the house is part rendered. For the full description and the legal address of these listed buildings please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} It seems likely the mill was constructed after the canalization of the River Slea which runs beside it, which opened to traffic in 1794. It was a corn mill running on water power until the canal was closed to traffic in 1881 when the water flow had become unreliable due to water abstraction upstream. At this point an alternative power source for the mill was needed, and so it is assumed that this is when the engine shed beside it was constructed. The shed housed a static steam engine, possibly a locally-produced Robey type. A tractor also appears to have been used during the 20th century to power the millstones, as a part from a 'Titan' type tractor, manufactured between 1914 and 1924, was found in the mill building. The mill continued in use until 1957. After milling ceased, the main building roof was repaired but the engine shed was neglected. The main mill building retains its wheel and machinery intact (although the timber parts are decayed) but the engine shed collapsed in 1990 leaving only the western and part of the eastern walls standing. Within these walls are two unusual 'gothic' type windows (one in situ) of a pattern popular between 1790 and 1820 - these are presumed to have been re-used from an older building, possibly one which was demolished to make way for the shed. {2}
