Full Description
PRN 36809
A local resident remembers this field being quarried for sand on a small, intermittent scale a generation ago which may explain some of the earthworks previously interpreted as medieval settlement remains (see PRN 34983). {1}
During a walkover survey, it was noted that the northern part of the field contains a number of earthworks, generally rectangular hollows which are more likely to be extraction quarries rather than settlement remains. {2}
During trial trenching, a number of undated pits were noted which appear to be related to sand and gravel quarrying. A further, similar pit contained a fragment of late post medieval brick or tile suggesting a possible date for the quarrying activity. {3}{4}
These features may have been identified during a geophysical survey carried out prior to trial trenching. {5}
