Full Description

PRN 70536 This chapel is first mentioned in the documentary sources in 1200, and its foundation cannot have been much earlier as it is dedication to St Thomas of Canterbury (Thomas Becket) who was canonised in 1173. The chapel was sited on the east side of the High Bridge. Several chantries were founded there including one for the Mayor and Corporation founded in 1304. In 1549 the chapel was desecrated. The bell was removed and sold and the house was let out as a dwelling house. In 1569 it was granted to the Company of Tanners and Butchers as a hall for their fellowship. It was finally demolished in 1762. {1}{2}{3}{4}
