Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
PRN 70551
Demolition and clearance of a former teaching block at the Greestone Centre revealed a brick structure adjoining the Close Wall (PRN70180). A subsequent watching brief provided an opportunity to study the brick structure, which is thought to be the remains of a heated orangery wall. The structure stands 3m high and is about 0.4m wide and is built from yellow fire bricks. The wall would have been heated by a coal fire at its eastern end, allowing exotic plants such as oranges and peaches to be grown in an adjoining south facing greenhouse. The orangery is as yet undated, first appearing on Padley's map of 1842. The orangery must have fallen into disuse by 1911 when the next phase of school building was constructed, blocking access to the wall's fire room and leaving the orangery as a standard unheated greenhouse. It is thought that the wall underwent three phases of construction and repair.{1}{2}
The heated wall collapsed in January 2007.{3}
