Full Description

PRN 70544 High up (below the string course and immediately above the single light window at second floor level) on the west face of the tower of St Peter at Gowts church (PRN 70543) is a re-used carved stone showing a seated figure holding two vertical rods. This was thought to be Anglo Saxon in origin but this has been discounted and it is now thought to be Roman. The identity of the figure has been the subject of much debate and interpretations include Christ in majesty, St Peter with his Keys and the mithraic god Arimanius (see also PRN 70545). {1}{2}{3}{4}
