Full Description

PRN 64236 There are two legends connected with the Common, which may be connected. The first refers to the "Coffin Stones", several large coffin-shaped stones lying near each other but without any kind of regularity. They are said to have occupied their present situation "far beyond the time of human memory or tradition", although they appear to have been broken up for use in constructing gateways by the time Ethel Rudkin investigated the story in the 1930's. One story tells that the stones were dropped by a witch who had stolen them from a "a temple which stood on high ground" (it is suggested that this temple may have been at the site of Drake Stone at Anwick or at the church site on high ground at Dorrington). There is also a rhyme attached to the stones: "The Kings of England France and Spain,/ Met together in a shower of rain;/ The rain came and made the dirty weather,/ And here they all lie down together." {1}{2} This rhyme may link the stones to the other local legend, which tells of events at Seven Kings Field (situated north of the turning to Heckington off the Ewerby road that goes to the fen). This field is so named due to a battle that is supposed to have taken place there which involved seven kings. The legend does not specify who the kings were, where they came from or when or why they fought - these details appear to have been forgotten, although Oliver Cromwell is suggested as one of the kings. {1}
