Full Description

PRN 64109 Late 12th century parochial chapel founded by Peter Goxhill and local inhabitants. {1} The chapel in Roxholm was annexed to the church of Leasingham. It still existed in 1560 but had 'long since passed away' by the 19th century. It probably stood close to the manor house, but its exact site is no longer known. The circular head of a tombstone, on which is cut an elaborate cross in relief, and part of an octagonal shaft, each face being hollowed, were found in the 19th century and are thought to belong to the chapel. {2} The destruction of the chapel probably took place during the early years of Queen Elizabeth I's reign. It is supposed to have been situated in a small pasture to the east of an ancient family house, and adjoining the garden wall. Large stones, which had evidently been used for a building of some importance, have been dug up in the field and a very small stone coffin is built into the garden wall. {3}
