Full Description

Grade II* Listed tower mill constructed in 1798. Brick, tarred, with ogee domed wooden cap and finial. Concrete plinth, cogged eaves, fantail, 4 patent sails. Interior contains machinery assembled from various windmills. {1} This very small tower mill was built in 1798 and worked until 1941 when one of the remaining pair of sails was blown off. The cap was taken off in the 1940s, followed by the removal of the machinery, and the tower then stood disused until 1975 when it was set on fire and completely gutted. However it was restored by the Lincoln Civic Trust between 1977-1980 and ground flour again for the first time in 1981. It has been open to visitors since and is now part of the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The restoration was carried out using machinery salvaged from mills at Toynton All Saints and Sturton by Stow. {2} This mill is the only survivor of a line of nine windmills which extended along The Cliff. A watching brief took place on ground immediately beside the mill and identified the remnants of two probable ancilliary buildings associated with the mill. Ash deposits from the burning of the mill were also identified. {4}{5}
