Full Description

Part of a metalled yard surface was identified in this location in June 2006, during trial trenching on land at Welham Street. The surface was found at a depth of 1.5m in one of the trenches excavated, below extensive layers of modern made-ground. The surface was constructed from crudely shaped sedimentary rock fragments, roughly packed together to form what was thought to be an external yard area. The surface was directly overlain by a dumped deposit of animal bone waste, almost wholly comprised of the remains of sheep limb bones. It was thought that the concentration of animal remains in this area could indicate that a butchery or tannery site was in close proximity. Two sherds of 13th to 15th century pottery were mixed in with the animal bone deposit, suggesting a broad medieval date for this activity. A further redeposited sherd of 12th to 13th century medieval pottery was also recovered from one of the overlying modern made-ground layers. {1}{2}
