Full Description

PRN 70513 A late 13th century Church which was rebuilt in 1695 and remodelled in 1882 by G F Bodley. It was constructed in the Decorated style of dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The original church of St Mary Magdalene stood on part of the site of the Minster and was destroyed to make way for it. The parishioners were assigned a portion of the western part of the new cathedral for their parochial services but at the end of the 13th century it was decided to build a new parish church "for greater security, comeliness and quiet". This church survived the Reformation but was subjected to extensive repairs or rebuilding in 1638, 1695 (following destruction during the Civil War) and 1882. Most of the present church fabric dates from the Victorian rebuilding although some of the 1695 fabric survives. It is possible that some fragments of the original 13th century fabric may remain within the current church, although if so none have been found to date. The main churchyard was located elsewhere, to the south of the cathedral nave, although some burials (probably of elite parishioners) may have taken place inside the church or in a small open area to the east (in front of the modern Exchequergate Lodge). An overspill graveyard to the south of Chapel Lane was opened in 1826. {2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
