Full Description
PRN 70504
Evidence of continuous medieval and post medieval occupation was discovered during trial trenching on land to the south of 20 Michaelgate. Features observed include a mortar floor surface sealed by a deposit containing 14th-15th century pottery, three possible medieval pits, and a sequence of limestone wall footings. The medieval wall footings comprise a north-south footing sealed by a medieval deposit, probably representing the rear wall of a building on the Michaelgate frontage. This wall has been robbed out, and a robber trench was visible. The medieval wall was replaced by a later wall which overlay it on the same alignment, indicating a post medieval replacement of the building. A further wall butted at a right angle to it and probably extended to the Michaelgate frontage. A further set of undated possible mortar foundations was observed which may belong to another building. Locally produced medieval pottery was recovered, along with a domestic animal bone assemblage. A small assemblage of post medieval ceramic building material, glass and clay pipe was also recovered. {1}{2}
