Full Description

PRN 13864 Trial trenches dug in the grounds of Fishtoft Manor uncovered evidence of the occupation of the site from the Middle Saxon period or earlier until the mid 12th century. The earliest features include four postholes sealed by a thick layer of buried soil containing 7th-9th century pottery. More buried soil layers contained 9th-10th century pottery. Environmental samples identified cereals, fragments of animal and fish bone, mollusc shell, charcoal fragments and small amounts of industrial residue. These assemblages would seem to be primarily derived from low-density scatters of domestic hearth waste with an input of materials from nearby light industrial activities. The occupation of the site continued into the Saxo-Norman period until the mid 12th century. Features of this period include a broad linear cut and a pit containing Stamford ware and a bone comb. {1}{2} A ditch and a buried soil were uncovered during a watching brief. These features were undated due to lack of artefactual evidence but it is thought that they could be of Late Saxon date. A single late Saxon sherd was also recovered as well as a small quantity of medieval pottery and tile. {3}{4}
