Paleaoenvironmental deposits, Waterside North, Lincoln

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

PRN 70502 Palaeoenvironmental sampling at the former Slipper Baths site showed that this part of the north bank of the River Witham was damp or wet throughout the Roman and medieval periods. However there is no evidence to suggest that the river encroached upon the site at this time, rather the site was marginal or on the river edge and domestic refuse was dumped there. There are also two instances where the ground appears to have been wetter and was probably flooded. Preservation of organic material including leather, wood, seeds, beetles, pollen etc. was good below 2.5-3m beneath the current ground surface. {1}{2}
