Full Description
PRN 46666
During an archaeological excavation on land at High Farm, Halton Holegate, evidence for early to middle Anglo-Saxon settlement was recovered. The period was characterised by a series of discrete features (pits and postholes) all containing the same range of pottery fabrics. One of the features, probably a grubenhaus, contained over 300 sherds of pottery and fragments of animal bone, iron slag and clay loomweights. A small quantity of late Romano-British pottery sherds and tile were also recovered from the early Medieval deposits (it is not unusual for Roman brick, tile and pottery to be found in Anglo-Saxon contexts, having been carried there by the occupants).{1}{2}
