Full Description
An American Lockheed P38 Lightning crashed to the west of Kelstern on the 14th of February 1944. The aircraft was designated 40-773 of 311 Ferry Squadron. It is thought that the aircraft was flying too low and crashed into a hill because of fog on the day, disintegrating as it impacted and killing the pilot. The crash site was confirmed in September 2006, after a metal detecting survey conducted by the Lincolnshire Aircraft Recovery Group revealed an area of magnetic anomalies in this location. No deep wreckage was identified but a concentrated surface scatter of wreckage was found and a few dozen small pieces were collected, including a fragment of instrument panel and an identification plate from the Sperry Gyroscope Company. It was determined that the aircraft probably flew into the ground from the east. {1}{2}
