Full Description
The deserted village or hamlet of Hardwick was in or near the parish of Panton, although its site has not been found. Panton and Hardwick (Herdwyk) were separate but linked places in medieval documention in 1316, 1327 and 1333. {1}
The village name Harwick comes from the Old English 'heorde-wic' meaning a herd form. {2}
In the 1334 Lay Subsidy returns there is an entry for Panton and Hardwick by Wragby with a return of £4 9s.0d. which is slightly higher than the average for the wapentake. Panton will have been the larger of the two settlements. {3}
The 1377 poll tax return for Panton and Hardwick by Wragby was 80 taxpayers. {4}
In the Diocesan census returns for 1563 Harwick hamlet is recorded with only 2 households. {5}
M. Beresford noted the village as a deserted medieval village in the 1950s and his suggested site, at TF 175 789, is close to Panton House and the deserted settlement of Panton village. This location was followed by the Medieval Village Research Group in their list of deserted villages. {6}{7}
A deserted medieval village was noted by the staff of the National Mapping Programme but they did not identify the village. Earthwork remains of ridge and furrow, crofts, crew yards and a pond were identified on aerial photography and plotted by the National Mapping Programme. {8}
This is probably more likely to be the site of the deserted medieval village of Hardwick, rather than the site suggested by Beresford that lies to the east. {9}
More extensive remains than those previously identified could be discerned on Google Maps satellite imagery. {10}
