Full Description

PRN 13842 The pumping station was built in 1867 when shrinking of the peat in the Eastern Fen (due to efficient drainage) lowered the land surface and the water had to be pumped into the higher southern half of the Hobhole Drain. Diesel pumps were installed in 1940 but the Victorian building and chimney still remain. Alongside the pumping station are the remains of a lock. {1} The lock was built in 1805 by John Rennie.
