Full Description

Field boundary or drainage ditches and a buried soil of Romano-British (2nd-3rd century AD) date were found during trial trenching to the east of Westfield House. Environmental sampling indicated that grain was being grown and processed in the vicinity. Residual Roman pottery and briquetage was also recovered. {1}{2} Further Romano-British remains were revealed in May 2006, during an excavation, conducted to clarify the results of earlier trial trenching. These remains included pits, ditches and gullies as well as a substantial north-west to south-east ditch. Given the lack of features elsewhere on the development site, it seems likely that this ditch formed the western boundary of the occupation site. The site itself was probably a small farmstead. Environmental evidence indicated that either spelt wheat processing or the use of processing waste as fuel for small scale industry, or both, was taking place on site. The pottery recovered was mainly grey ware, however some dales ware sherds were present suggesting coastal trading. The animal bone assemblage includes sheep/goat, cattle, pig and dog and seems to represent general butchery waste. The small finds include a possible loom weight, daub and a small amount of briquetage, insufficient to suggest salt working nearby. {3}{4}
