Full Description
A former hotel which is now derelict. It was built in the late 18th century and altered in the 20th century. The building was constructed in red brick and had slate roofs with brick coped tumbled gables. The Marine Hotel was built specifically for the seaside trade of the late 18th century. Freiston Shore was developed as a bathing resort in the late 18th century and was still popular in the 19th century, but being bypassed by the railway it declined. The hotel closed around 1970. The Marine Hotel is thought to have been used in the Second World War to provide accommodation for soldiers who defended the Boston Examination Battery, located at Freiston Shore (see MLI13376). {4}{5}
A photograph of the former hotel was taken in July 2007, during site visits conducted for the Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. The building has been partially demolished, and was in a poor condition at the time of the visit. {6}
