Full Description

Two former Second World War pillboxes with possible associated slit trenches, to the north of Chapel St Leonards. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. Both pillboxes can be clearly seen as extant structures on a vertical black and white aerial photograph taken in April 1972. Short, linear earthworks that appeared to lead from each of the former pillboxes were thought to be the remains of former slit trenches. {1}{2} The pillboxes were located at grid references TF 55110 73732 and TF 55117 73797. They were both of the hexagonal, type-22 form, and were built with machine gun tables to their wide, front loops, but without rear loops or anti-ricochet walls. Neither pillbox is now extant, and are thought to have been relocated or destroyed by the farmer at some point before 1991. It was thought that the pillboxes may still be extant on the farm, possibly in the area around the farmstead at TF 5457 7411. {3}{4}
