Full Description

PRN 46451 Features relating to this site and/or the Roman occupation are visible on geophysical survey data gathered in 2002. {4}{5} Excavations prior to the construction of the Partney by-pass revealed a complex Iron Age settlement site in use from c.150 BC until the Roman occupation. The site continues in use as a settlement throughout the early Roman period (see 44851). Features include a late Iron Age temple consisting of an enclosure ditch and internal shrine. This feature continued in use well into the Roman period. Close to the temple on the east side are several burials, dating from late Iron Age to late 1st century AD. A possible earlier ritual site, consisting of a curvilinear ditch, was also present. Numerous ditches and enclosures were found representing all periods of the settlement's use. These include a late Iron Age enclosed farmstead. Post holes suggesting four-post structures are also found throughout the site's occupation. These may represent storage granaries or platforms for laying out the dead. {1}{2}{3}
