Full Description

A palaeochannel running north-south directly to the west of the current Beck was uncovered during excavation prior to the construction of the Partney by-pass. Borehole samples were also taken. The lowest sampled fills of the channel date to the late Bronze Age, with continual silt deposition occurring throughout the later prehistoric, Romano-British and medieval periods. A medieval weight was found in one of the upper fills. The channel was uncovered again further north, where a tributary palaeochannel flowing into it was also uncovered. These channels border the Iron Age/Roman settlement in this area (see 46451 and 44851), and the siting of the temple/shrine complex in relation to the channels suggests that they may have been of some significance. Samples and cores were taken from the channels, the results of which suggest that the silting up of the channels at this section may have begun as early as the Neolithic. Two springhead features were also identified. {1}{2}
