Full Description

The majority of RAF Saltby lies within Leicestershire, although its eastern end crosses into Lincolnshire by a few hundred metres. It was orignally built and opened as a grass airfield in 1941. In 1944 it was transformed into a 3-runway airfield. Towards the end of the war it became a USAAF base and was a troop carrier airfield of the US 82nd Airbourne Division. The 82nd's Lincolnshire airfields were RAF Fulbeck, RAF Folkingham, RAF Barkston Heath and RAF Saltby. The airfield ceased military use in 1955 and is now used by Buckminster Gliding Club. {1}{2}
