Full Description

PRN 70478 Twelve trenches were investigate to evaluate a proposed development on land off South Park, Lincoln. These trenches identified evidence for possible sand extraction in the Medieval peiod, sealed beneath alluivial deposits that are indicative of seasonal flooding of the area. A small assemblage of tile and pottery sherds were recovered during the evaluation.{1}{2} A subsequent archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks for a school development. The watching brief identified two linear features, oriented roughly northeast to southwest and, apparently, on converging alignments. One of the ditches produced two handles from Lincoln Glazed Ware vessels dating to the 14th to 15th Century. Toward the southwestern part of the site, a curvilinear ditch produced a further two handles of 13th to 15th Century Lincoln Glazed Ware. A fragment of early to mid-13th century nib tile was also retrieved from a possible ditch.{3}{4}
