Full Description

PRN 23962 An archaeological watching brief undertaken on land at Lowgate, Gedney. Two ditches, dated to the Medieval period, were recorded in the northeast corner of the site. The earlier linear was aligned north to south whilst the latter was orientated northeast to southwest sugessting a change in land use in this phase. The small artefactual assemblage would indicate limited utilisation of the area during this time with the Medieval objects possibly entering the area as manuring scatter. His would suggest the land was being used for agricultural activity with the linears being created for drainage and land management. However the majority of the pottery sherds are from pitchers that may suggest usage whilst on the land and therefore casual breakage. The small quantity of Medieval pottery included local and non-local wares of 11th to 12th century date. The proximity of this area of land to the Medieval Manor (PRN 23017) and Chapel (PRN 22285) to the south and east respectively may imply an association with the produce from the land being consumed by its inhabitants.{1}{2}
