Full Description

PRN 46414 An archaeological watching brief undertaken during groundworks at Kelsey Hall, Great Steeping, identified a group of ditches and pits dated to the 13th to 15th centuries. The ditch features exposed were of uncertain purpose, possibly as drainage or subdivision of interior of the moat at Kelsey Hall (assuming them to be contemporary). Pottery recovered fro the site ranges in date from the 11th to 15th century. Much of the pottery appears to be wares produced at Toynton All Saints, a major Medieval pottery producing settlment some 5km away. Toynton ware pancheons are notably plentiful in the assemblage and this bias is probably related to function - the vessels may have been used as milk containers, which would indicate dairying activities at the site. The quantity of material, including cattle, sheep and deer bone, suggests domestic occupation in the immediate vicinity in the Medieval period. There is a significant decrease in artefact quantities after the 15th century, suggesting a functional change and reduction in the level of occupation on the site or immediate vicinity.{1}{2}
