Full Description

A early 19th century cast iron milepost. Triangular plan with a chamfered top, with raised lettering. Inscribed "Parish of Ashby. LONDON 122" and on the north face "To SLEAFORD 7 MILES" and on the south face "To LINCOLN 10 MILES". This milepost was presumably resited on the wrong side of the road, since Lincoln is to the north and Sleaford to the south.{1} The 1905 Second Edition OS map shows a mile post some 220 metres north of Ashby Lodge Farm and immediately west of Toll Bar Plantation (TF0285855500). The milepost is depicted with "Lincoln 10, Sleaford 7" and may be the original site of the post prior to it being moved to its current position.{2}
