Full Description
An early 19th century cast-iron milepost. The post has a triangular plan with a chamfered top, with raised lettering inscribed 'Parish of Ashby. LONDON 122'. The north face is inscribed 'To SLEAFORD 7 MILES', whilst the south face reads 'To LINCOLN 10 MILES'. This milepost has presumably been resited on the wrong side of the road from its original location, since Lincoln is actually to the north and Sleaford is to the south. The 2nd edition 5" Ordnance Survey County Series map shows a mile post some 220 metres north of the entrance to Ashby Lodge Farm and immediately west of Toll Bar Plantation (at c.TF 0285 5550). The milepost is depicted with the same 'Lincoln 10, Sleaford 7' distances, and is very likely to be the same milepost, marked in its original site, prior to it being moved to its current position at some point in the mid 20th century. {3}
