Monument record MLI88179 - Cobbled Surface, Copse View, Witham on the Hill

Summary

Cobbled surface of unknown date, at Copse View, Witham on the Hill.

Full Description

A cobbled surface was revealed whilst digging a flower bed in the front garden at Copse View. The surface appeared to extend across large parts of the beds and front lawn. Copse View is a mid 20th century property, and no earlier structure is depicted in this location on historical mapping of the area. There is speculation that this area was the site of the original manor house of the Harrington family who owned large tracts of south Lincolnshire, including the Witham on the Hill estate in the 16th century. Large fragments of stone, some of which is dressed, have previously been found in this area and in the field behind Copse View. {1}
