Full Description

A large scatter of prehistoric worked flints, including scrapers, flakes and cores, was found in 1954, in this area around the spring to the east of Crowland Farm. A further collection of flints was found in the same area in 1964-5, with the assemblage including cores, scrapers, flakes, microliths, and 3 leaf-arrowheads. A Neolithic flint axe was also found in this area in 1967. {1}{2} Many of the flints recovered from this area in the 1960s are held by Lincoln Museum, as part of the C. Rasdall collection. The assemblage was catalogued as part of the Colonisation of Britain Project, and comprises a wide variety of tools and debitage pieces, including cores, scrapers, blades, microliths, microburins and piercers, thought to range in date from the Mesolithic to late Bronze Age. {3} Systematic field walking was conducted on this land to the east of Crowland Farm in 2000. The field walking retrieved a large number of flint implements and debitage dating to between the early Neolithic and late Bronze Age. The tools included tanged and barbed arrowheads, leaf arrowheads, cores and range of scrapers. The implements appeared to be concentrated towards the north-east of the survey area. {4} More worked flints and flint flakes were found during further field walking in 2002. {5}
