Full Description
PRN 46158
Medieval earthworks of an occupation site were observed on aerial photographs as part of the national mapping programme. They were interpreted as enclosures, building platforms, moat and pound. {1}
A magnetometry survey was carried out over part of this site and anomalies were recorded which clearly correspond to the cropmark features. In addition a possible moat ditch surrounding the occupation was noted.{2}
Archaeological evaluation identified a large pit containing eleven articulated cattle skeletons and one pony skeleton. There is clear evidence for fire having impacted upon the sediments surrounding the bones, and that some attempt may have been made to fire the contents of the pit or put ash over them. The absence of any burnt bone indicates that any such fire was not sufficiently intense to have burnt the carcasses and charred their bones. This evidence, along with the evidence that animals of all ages are represented in the pit suggests that the cattle may have died through disease. Pottery recovered from the fills of the feature dated to the 13th to the early or mid 14th century. Daub, cob and fired clay fragments found within the pit suggest the presence of a nearby house, possibly one built in the mud and stud tradition. The pit appears to be an isolated feature peripheral to the moated site recorded to the north.{3}{4}
