Full Description

Eleven Abbasid dirhem fragments found in Torksey. The locations are unrecorded although nine are reported as coming from three adjacent fields in Torksey and so this is not a dispersed hoard. These Islamic coins will have reached England via Russia and Scandinavia, perhaps along Viking trade routes. They may well have been cut-up or broken for use in transactions en route rather than after their arrival in England. The coins range in date from the second half of the eighth century and the first five decades of the ninth century. {1}
