Full Description

PRN 63709 An archaeological watching brief and subsequent excavation along the route of the Silk Willoughby to Staythorpe gas pipeline indentified two linear features of Roman date. The first was a large northwest to southeast aligned ditch which at the eastern end changed direction and returned to the south. The fill of this ditch produced one sherd of late Romano-British pottery (late 3rd to 4th century) and a few fragments of cattle teeth. A smaller ditch followed a different alignment (northeast to southwest) and joined, but did not cross the larger ditch. Evidence suggest that both these features may represent the remains of a 3rd to 4th century field system.{1}{2}
