Full Description
PRN 63705
An archaeological watching brief and subsequent excavation along the route of the Silk Willoughby to Staythorpe gas pipeline recorded a sub-circular burial platform which had been cut by a series of pits containing cremated human bone and surrounded by part of a small, possibly sub-circular ring ditch. Thirteen features (12 pits and a scoop) contained cremated human bone, distributed over a 'platform' and across a backfilled ring-ditch. Nine cremations were sited on the platform, usually in small subcircular or oval pits. Thirteen adults and two juveniles were present and both sexes were represented. Radiocarbon dates were obtained from the samples. The dates ranged from 4410+/-BP to 4270+/-BP and suggests a late Neolithic/early Bronze Age date for the ring ditch. A bone pin was found within a cremation pit and was probably fashioned from a horse metacarpus or metatarsus. The object had been burnt, probably in the same cremation pyre, which had apparently bent the pin. The ring ditch could be an isolated structure or may form part of a larger cemetery (see PRNs 62750, 62751 and 62752). It appears that the structure was the focus of burial activity over an extended period of time since it was still in use after the ditch had silted up. Residual pottery recovered from the surface of the ring ditch itself suggests it was still a landscape feature in the Iron Age.{1}{2}
