Full Description

PRN 63701 A watching brief and subsequent excavation conducted along the route of the Silk Willoughby to Staythorpe Gas Pipeline recorded a group of ditches dating to the Romano-British period. Four linear features were found to cross the easement, two ditches were seen to be on a north to south alignment, and a larger ditch bsiected these on a nothwest to southeast orientation. The northern end of a square-sided enclosure was uncovered along the southern edge of the easement. All the ditches were deep, cut with steep sides andf a U-shape profile. The pottery recovered suggests that the two north to south ditches date to the late 2nd to 3rd century, and the other ditches to the 3rd to late 4th century.{1}{2}
