A trail trench was undertaken at Thorngate House, Broadgate, Lincoln prior to development. A medieval wall was uncovered as was the robbed out trench of an earlier wall. Either one of these could have been the medieval extension of the Roman city wall down to the river. There were also pits dating to the 12th to 14th centuries by the pottery that they contained. {1} {2}
A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks at Thorngate House, Broadgate, Lincoln prior to development. Further evidence of the town wall was uncovered. It is thought that the remains of the wall uncovered by the trial trench and watching brief dates to the 15th century and therefore is too late to be the town wall, but this cuts a robber trench of an earlier wall also uncovered in both the trial trench and the watching brief and that this is the remains of the 12th century town wall. {3} {4}
A borehole was augered at Thorngate House, Broadgate, Lincoln prior to development. It appeared to show the deposit of a medieval ditch or pit. {3} {4}
