Full Description

63417 An antler disc was found in 1993 by Paul Scholey. Around the edge are eight irregular projections giving the piece a cog-wheel-like appearance. The faces of the disc are decorated with deeply cut ringed dots. It has a high degree of polish on the faces and the edges of the projections. A positive identification of the object is impossible, as close parallels are not known. It is suggested that it is a gaming piece used in a games called 'tables'. This was a game known in England by the early eleventh century, but no gaming pieces are known dating to the end of the medieval period. {1}
