Summary

Possible grange of Thurgaton Priory, Scopwick

Type and Period (1)

  • (Medieval - 1150 AD? to 1539 AD)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

63412 In 1276 Thurgaton Priory held six bovates of the Deyncourt family here. The evidence for a grange is tenuous, although Scopwick was listed as a place where money was collected in the late twelfth century, and the priors of Thurgaton had a court here. Other houses, however, held considerable land here in the thirteenth century. St Catherine's had a grange in Scopwick (60918) and the Knights Templar had a sheepfold and two carucates, Haverholme had a further two carucates and Catley had six bovates. {1}
